Oldham
We were faced with no wall here and an awful lot of clay to retain. The owners were keen to build on this land and,
to that end , wanted a surrounding wall with character.
before
At the far end of the lane ( at the top of the photograph ) they also wanted a small wall from which they
could hang some gates. We used wet - walling on a foundation both for strength to retain such a large amount of
material and also to take the weight of gates.

A dry-stone wall will be half as wide at the base as it is high - this is an essential for strength. In order to keep the base narrow and to build vertically you also need to provide a cement core which is what we did here.
